Petrolia, CA – The first on-land aftershock from Thursday’s 7.0 offshore earthquake near Cape Mendocino was recorded Friday morning, highlighting the ongoing seismic activity along California’s North Coast. The aftershock, measured at a magnitude of 3.1, struck 7 kilometers southeast of Petrolia at 6:32 a.m. PST, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

This follows the powerful earthquake that occurred Thursday at 10:44 a.m. PST, which prompted a tsunami warning for parts of the California and Oregon coasts, including areas as far south as San Francisco. While the tsunami warning was later canceled, the event underscored the risks of seismic activity along the West Coast.

Since the main quake, over a dozen aftershocks have been recorded, with most occurring offshore. The 3.1 aftershock marks the first to occur on land, serving as a reminder that the region remains highly seismically active.

Seismologists warn that additional aftershocks are likely in the coming days, with the potential for some to reach magnitudes of 5.0 or higher. Residents in the affected area are encouraged to stay prepared and review earthquake safety plans as the region continues to experience ground movement.
