Blacksburg, VA – A widespread early December snowfall brought several inches of accumulation across portions of southwest and central Virginia overnight, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg.

From late Thursday night through Friday afternoon, snow totals generally ranged from 3 to 5 inches, with the heaviest amounts observed near Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Lynchburg. The NWS noted that areas along and east of Interstate 77 and into the Virginia Piedmont picked up the most accumulation, while lighter amounts under one inch were seen closer to the North Carolina border.

Official reports show Blacksburg received 3.8 inches, Roanoke 3.4 inches, and Lexington and Lynchburg around 4 inches. Farther west, Bluefield and Lewisburg each measured about 4 inches as well.

While the snow has tapered off, forecasters caution that lingering slick spots remain possible on untreated roads and bridges, particularly overnight as temperatures dip below freezing. Drivers are urged to use caution and allow extra travel time.

Residents can submit local snowfall observations to the NWS via their online reporting portal to assist in refining official totals.
