Burlington, VT – Residents across Vermont will officially welcome fall this Monday afternoon as the autumnal equinox arrives, marking the astronomical start of the new season.
According to the National Weather Service Burlington, the equinox will occur on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 2:19 p.m. EDT. On this day, both the northern and southern hemispheres will experience nearly equal amounts of daylight and nighttime. In Burlington, the sun will rise at 6:40 a.m. and set at 6:50 p.m., giving residents just over 12 hours of daylight.
The word “equinox” comes from the Latin terms aequus (equal) and nox (night). This celestial event marks the transition from summer to fall and signals shorter days and cooler temperatures ahead. The next key solar milestone will be the winter solstice on December 21, when daylight in Burlington will shrink to just 8 hours and 50 minutes.
The NWS also notes that equinoxes and solstices serve as good seasonal reminders to check household safety equipment, including smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, ensuring they have fresh batteries and are in working condition.
