Central Illinois – Central Illinois is under an elevated fire risk today as dry and windy conditions increase the chances of field fires. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned that humidity levels will drop to 20-25% this afternoon, while northwest winds are expected to gust between 25-30 mph.
According to the NWS, this combination of dry air and strong winds poses a significant fire hazard, especially for areas north of I-70. Residents with outdoor burning plans are urged to delay until winds diminish on Monday. The NWS also cautions farmers to watch for potential field fires during harvesting.
The fire danger will remain high between noon and 7 p.m. today. Wind gusts south of I-70 are expected to reach up to 20 mph. The NWS advises avoiding open burning and urges extra caution with farm machinery to prevent accidental sparks.
Residents should remain vigilant and monitor local conditions as elevated fire risks continue into the evening.
