Abilene, TX – A Red Flag Warning will be in effect across West Central Texas on Monday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. CDT due to critical fire weather conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, dry fuels, breezy conditions, and low humidity will create an elevated risk of fire spread. Winds from the west-northwest are expected to reach sustained speeds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. Humidity levels could drop as low as 10%, further exacerbating the fire threat.
The warning covers several counties, including areas around Abilene, San Angelo, Sweetwater, and Sterling City. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and any activities that may produce sparks, as fires can ignite easily and spread rapidly under these conditions.
Authorities advise residents to secure loose objects, properly dispose of cigarette butts, and ensure vehicles are not parked on dry grass. If a fire starts, residents should report it immediately to emergency services.
The National Weather Service recommends extreme caution throughout Monday, especially for those working outdoors or traveling through affected areas. Fire officials will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary.
