Albany, NY – An elevated fire risk warning is in place for eastern New York today as dry, windy conditions could accelerate the spread of wildfires. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Albany has cautioned residents across the Capital District, Mid-Hudson Valley, and the Taconic regions to avoid outdoor burning to help reduce the risk.

According to the NWS, gusts of up to 25 mph, combined with relative humidity levels as low as 30%, will create conditions highly conducive to rapid fire spread. Winds today are expected to blow westward, affecting areas from Albany to Saratoga Springs and neighboring counties. Fire officials recommend avoiding any activities involving flames or spark-producing tools near dry grass or vegetation.

The Special Weather Statement, issued early this morning, will remain in effect until conditions improve. Residents should exercise extra caution, particularly along major roadways such as I-87 and Route 9, where vegetation can quickly ignite under these conditions. Be sure to extinguish cigarettes fully and avoid any unnecessary burning or outdoor fire activities.

Looking ahead, temperatures will warm up significantly this week. After a high of 55 degrees today, temperatures will rise to the mid-70s by Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday are forecasted to be mostly sunny with highs reaching the lower 60s. A slight chance of showers is expected Tuesday night, though it may not be enough to alleviate the dry conditions.

Extended Forecast:

Today: Sunny, high near 55; wind gusts up to 23 mph.

Tonight: Slight chance of showers, low around 33.

Monday: Mostly sunny, high near 52.

Tuesday: High near 62 with gusts up to 22 mph.
