Indianapolis, IN — Central Indiana faces an elevated fire risk today as a weather system moves in from the west, bringing gusty winds of up to 30 mph. The National Weather Service warns that dry vegetation and low humidity levels between 20-30% are creating prime conditions for grass and brush fires.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the combination of strong winds and dry air will persist throughout the afternoon. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, as any sparks could quickly escalate into dangerous fires. Motorists along I-65 and other major roadways should remain alert for potential visibility issues from wind-driven debris or fires near roadsides.

Temperatures will range between 75-80°F, further drying out the landscape. The National Weather Service advises against discarding cigarettes and parking vehicles on dry grass, as these can ignite fires. It’s also critical to check any outdoor equipment to ensure it doesn’t create sparks around dry vegetation.
