Springfield, IL – Central Illinois faces an elevated fire risk today due to gusty winds and low humidity. The National Weather Service in Lincoln has issued a Special Weather Statement, warning of dangerous conditions from noon to 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service, northwest winds will gust between 25 and 35 mph. Combined with relative humidity as low as 25%, these conditions significantly raise the risk of fire. Any fires that ignite could spread quickly, especially in dry vegetation and cropland. Affected areas include Peoria, Bloomington, Springfield, and surrounding cities.
Residents are urged to avoid burning brush or grass. Additionally, they should exercise caution when using farm and outdoor equipment. Cigarette disposal requires extra care to prevent accidental ignitions.
