Buffalo, N.Y. – Dangerously hot conditions and a growing risk of flash flooding are expected across western and central New York through Sunday night, with heat index values nearing 100°F and repeated thunderstorms potentially triggering localized flood events.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Heat Advisory remains in effect Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the Lake Ontario shore, Genesee Valley, and Finger Lakes region. Maximum heat indices may reach between 95°F and 100°F, making outdoor activity hazardous.
Showers and isolated thunderstorms this afternoon will intensify Sunday into Sunday night. The Weather Prediction Center has placed much of western and central New York under a marginal to slight risk for excessive rainfall on Sunday, particularly across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes. Gusty winds and heavy downpours are likely, increasing the potential for localized flash flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
Residents in Rochester, Elmira, and Lockport should avoid outdoor exertion during peak heat and stay alert for rapidly rising water levels during storms. Charge devices, secure outdoor items, and prepare for sudden weather changes.
Heat and flood risks will persist through Sunday night, with additional advisories possible into Monday.
