Binghamton, New York – Heavy smoke from Canadian wildfires is blanketing Central New York, pushing air quality to dangerous levels and prompting health alerts through Monday night. Residents across the Finger Lakes and Syracuse are seeing some of the worst conditions, with the air quality index climbing well above 150 in multiple locations.

According to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, an air quality alert will remain in effect statewide until 11:59 p.m. Monday. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued a similar advisory for Northern Pennsylvania. Forecasters warn that an AQI between 150 and 200 can cause breathing difficulties for children, older adults, and anyone with heart or lung disease, while even healthy residents may notice irritation or minor symptoms.

The most affected areas include major highways like I-81 and I-90, with reduced visibility and hazy skies. Schools and outdoor activities may be impacted as districts monitor conditions. Health officials recommend limiting time outside, keeping windows closed, and running air purifiers if possible. Masks may offer additional protection for those who must be outdoors.

Air quality is expected to slowly improve as winds shift late Monday night, but additional smoke intrusions remain possible into early next week. More advisories could follow if conditions worsen.
