Philadelphia, PA – After weeks of dry conditions, the Mid-Atlantic is expected to see much-needed rain this week, with two separate rounds of showers moving through the region.

According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, light rain is possible Tuesday, September 23, followed by a heavier round on Thursday, September 25. Forecast maps show rainfall totals ranging from half an inch to just over an inch across much of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.

The system is expected to bring the most consistent precipitation to central Pennsylvania, where totals could approach 1 inch. Other areas, including Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia, may see lighter amounts, closer to 0.5 inches.

Despite the incoming rain, forecasters note that impacts on rivers and streams will be limited. “Rises on rivers will be minimal due to the recent dry weather and low flows,” the weather service reported Monday. That means flooding concerns remain low, even with the second round of heavier rain.

Residents are encouraged to plan for slick roads during the midweek commute and stay alert for updated forecasts as the systems develop. The rain is expected to provide short-term relief but may not be enough to fully reverse ongoing dry conditions across the Mid-Atlantic.
