Sumner, IA – A late-night crash on Highway 93 in Fayette County sent one person to the hospital Friday after a vehicle veered off the road and struck a residential embankment, according to authorities.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred December 5, 2025, at approximately 10:28 p.m. along Highway 93 near X Avenue. Deputies say 46-year-old Walter George Berfield of Sumner was driving west in a 2018 GMC Acadia when he allegedly swerved to avoid a deer in the roadway and entered the ditch. The vehicle then struck a driveway embankment, causing heavy damage.

A passenger, 35-year-old Brittany Sue Wolff of Sumner, was injured in the crash and transported by private vehicle to Sumner Hospital for treatment. The sheriff’s office did not specify the extent of her injuries.

Deputies investigating the scene also located a controlled substance inside the vehicle, according to the report. The sheriff’s office said the incident remains under investigation and charges are pending.
