Aurora, Ill. — In a July 1 press release, the Aurora Fire Department shared details for an investigation into a fatal apartment fire on the afternoon of June 30.

At approximately 2:15 p.m., the department received notice for a fire alarm activation at a four-story apartment complex. The apartments were located in the 900 block of North Avenue.

Upon arrival at the scene, residents were evacuating and reported light smoke on the second story. Firefighters entered the building and located the fire coming from an apartment on the west side. The unit was full of smoke and moderate heat. Firefighters found a small fire in the bedroom and quickly extinguished it. However, a woman was found deceased outside the apartment unit. No other injuries were found.

The 39-year-old woman was the only resident of the apartment, the fire department reported. The Kane County Coroner’s Office arrived at the scene and will conduct a full autopsy to determine the victims cause of death.

The department is continuing to investigate the cause of the fatal fire. No foul play is expected at this time. The unit was declared inhabitable.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the victim,” Aurora Fire Chief David McCabe said in the press release. “We are working closely with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Coroner to understand how this tragic incident occurred. Even a small fire can have heartbreaking consequences, particularly when someone faces serious health or mobility challenges”
