Quad Cities, IA/IL – Residents across the Iowa–Illinois Quad Cities region are being urged to take precautions today as the National Weather Service (NWS) issues an elevated fire risk warning for Sunday, October 5. The combination of strong winds, warm temperatures, and low humidity could cause any fires that start to spread rapidly.
According to the US National Weather Service Quad Cities, gusts of up to 30 miles per hour from the south are expected throughout the day, particularly during daylight hours. The dry and breezy conditions will make it easier for grass, brush, or crop fires to ignite and expand quickly, especially in rural and open areas.
Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning, heed any local burn bans, and use caution with farm and outdoor equipment that could produce sparks. Farmers, in particular, are urged to be careful when harvesting crops or operating machinery in dry fields.
The NWS also reminds the public not to discard cigarettes carelessly and to postpone any planned burns until conditions improve. The fire danger is expected to remain elevated into the evening.
