Grand Forks, North Dakota – Travel across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota could quickly deteriorate by Friday evening as heavy snow moves in, with visibility dropping and road conditions worsening during peak overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, snowfall will begin increasing Friday afternoon, with the heaviest bands developing Friday evening into early Saturday morning. Snowfall rates could approach 1 inch per hour at times, especially across the Red River Valley, including Fargo, Grand Forks, and surrounding communities.
Total accumulations are expected to range from 6 to 12 inches in many areas, with locally higher totals possible. Roads, including stretches of I-29 and U.S. Highway 2, may become snow-covered and slick, significantly impacting both Friday evening and Saturday morning commutes.
Officials warn that visibility may drop sharply during heavier bursts of snow, creating hazardous travel conditions. Snow may accumulate differently on roads versus grassy surfaces due to melting and compaction, but impacts to infrastructure and transportation are still expected.
Drivers are urged to avoid non-essential travel during peak snowfall hours, keep emergency kits in vehicles, and monitor updated road conditions. Snow will gradually taper from west to east by Saturday afternoon, but lingering impacts could continue beyond the main system.
