Fargo, North Dakota — Snowfall and blowing snow are expected to impact the Red River Valley Sunday into Sunday night, with reduced visibility and hazardous travel possible across eastern North Dakota and parts of Minnesota.

According to the National Weather Service Grand Forks, a stronger low-pressure system is now forecast to develop over Wisconsin, drawing increased moisture back into the region. This shift has raised snowfall potential across much of Minnesota and eastern North Dakota, particularly east of the Red River.

Forecast data shows a greater than 60 percent chance of 2 inches or more of snow from Sunday afternoon through 6 a.m. Monday for areas east of the river, including the Fargo-Moorhead region. While snowfall totals remain uncertain, even modest accumulation could lead to significant impacts when combined with increasing winds.

The National Weather Service reports north to northwest winds increasing to 25–30 mph, with gusts between 35 and 40 mph, especially within the Red River Valley. If stronger winds coincide with snowfall, visibilities may be greatly reduced due to blowing snow, particularly Sunday afternoon and Sunday night.

The highest risk for blowing snow has been identified across the eastern Red River Valley into west-central Minnesota, where threat levels range from elevated to significant. Areas farther west may see lower snowfall chances but still experience gusty winds.

Forecasters note uncertainty remains regarding the exact track of the storm system, which could shift snowfall amounts and impact areas. Residents are advised to monitor forecast updates closely as confidence improves.

Drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions, especially during evening and overnight travel. Even where snowfall amounts remain limited, blowing snow may create near-whiteout conditions in open areas.
