Grand Forks, N.D. – Residents across northeast North Dakota and northwest Minnesota woke up to an early taste of fall Thursday as temperatures plunged into the mid-30s, with some areas flirting with freezing. Langdon, North Dakota, registered 34 degrees before sunrise, while Grand Forks dipped to 38.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, widespread lows of 33 to 36 degrees were observed across northeast North Dakota, the Devils Lake region away from the water, and parts of northwest Minnesota. Airport sensors in Warroad, Grafton, Hallock, and Cavalier each recorded lows of 36, while Crookston and Moorhead hovered closer to 39.

The coolest spot reported was Langdon at 34, signaling the potential for patchy frost in rural areas. By contrast, locations under thicker cloud cover, such as Fosston and Bemidji, held in the low 40s, sparing crops and gardens from more serious chill.

Drivers heading out before sunrise should be alert for localized fog or dew that could make rural roads slick. Residents with late-season gardens may want to cover sensitive plants, as similar cold conditions could return again overnight.

Temperatures are expected to rebound into the 60s later Thursday, but another cool night is possible into Friday morning.
