Providence, R.I. – Fog slowed Rhode Island drivers early Tuesday with visibility dropping below a mile on I-95 and other major routes. Clearer skies return Wednesday, but the calm won’t last long as fall-like showers creep in by the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, Providence will see a partly sunny Wednesday with highs near 78 before steady sunshine dominates Thursday. A shift arrives late Thursday night into Friday when scattered showers build, especially along coastal areas and through inland commuter routes. Rain chances grow Friday morning into afternoon, possibly complicating travel for early football games and late-day school dismissals.

Statewide, sunny conditions will help midweek travelers. Winds stay light Wednesday before turning southerly and breezy Thursday. By Friday, heavier clouds and a 30% rain chance could dampen tailgates and evening traffic on I-95 and Route 146. Residents should keep umbrellas ready and plan for slick roads during peak hours.

Saturday continues unsettled, with additional showers and cooler southwest breezes. By Sunday, drier conditions return, though scattered showers may linger. Temperatures stay seasonable, with highs hovering in the upper 70s before edging cooler into next week.

Rhode Islanders should take advantage of Wednesday’s clear skies for outdoor plans and remain alert for changing conditions by Friday afternoon. Weather alerts may be issued as the weekend system strengthens.
