New York drivers and commuters should brace for hazardous travel as a strong stretch of rain and thunderstorms arrives Thursday. The first major fall weather system of the season could bring slick roads, delays, and pockets of localized flooding through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, showers will develop by Thursday afternoon, followed by widespread storms into the evening hours. Steady rain, gusty winds, and lightning could impact the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, FDR Drive, and other heavily traveled corridors. With storm chances peaking at 80 percent, transportation officials advise avoiding non-essential trips during the evening rush.

Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens could see ponding on roads and slower subway commutes. Staten Island and the Bronx may also face minor flooding in low-lying areas. Wind gusts between 20 and 25 mph could knock down tree limbs, raising risks of power outages in borough neighborhoods.

Conditions remain unsettled Friday with additional showers possible before midday. By Saturday, another round of scattered storms lingers, though some sunshine returns later in the day. Cooler, drier air is expected by Sunday, offering a more seasonable fall feel.

New Yorkers should charge devices, monitor local alerts, and allow extra travel time through late week. More advisories may be issued if storm intensity strengthens.
