KANSAS CITY, MO – A biting chill grips the Kansas City metro this morning as the region braces for its first widespread hard freeze of the season. Crisp air and frost already blanket rooftops and lawns across eastern Kansas and western Missouri, signaling that the growing season has officially ended. Residents are urged to cover sensitive plants, disconnect outdoor hoses, and protect pets from the cold as temperatures plunge into the upper 20s by sunrise Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, a Freeze Warning remains in effect through 8 a.m. Sunday for much of the Kansas City metro and nearby counties along I-70, including Jackson, Clay, Johnson, and Wyandotte. Forecasters say sub-freezing air will dominate late tonight into early Sunday, with calm winds enhancing frost formation. Even sheltered urban spots could briefly dip below 32°F.

The coldest readings will hit valleys and open fields from Leavenworth to Warrensburg, where frost could linger past sunrise. According to Missouri DOT, no travel hazards are expected, though slick patches could briefly develop on bridges before dawn.

Temperatures rebound Sunday afternoon as sunshine returns, ushering in a milder pattern to start the week. Highs will climb steadily into the 60s Monday, with hints of even warmer air by Tuesday. While the early-week thaw feels welcome, forecasters are already watching another potential temperature drop late next week—possibly the next step toward the season’s first light snow chances across northern Missouri.
