Fairbanks, AK – Temperatures have failed to rise above freezing for more than 140 consecutive days in Fairbanks, keeping roads, pipes, and daily routines locked in deep winter as late March nears its end.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, the city has not recorded a temperature of 33°F or higher since October 31. As of Tuesday afternoon, this ranks 2026 among the latest years on record for a first above-freezing day, currently sitting in fifth place with the thaw still pending.

Historical data shows the latest thaw on record occurred March 31, 2007, when temperatures finally reached 41°F. Other late-season milestones include March 29, 1959, and March 27, 2012. Fairbanks is now within days of climbing higher on that list if subfreezing conditions persist through the weekend.

The prolonged cold continues to affect infrastructure across Interior Alaska. Ice-packed roads remain common on routes like the Richardson Highway and local Fairbanks streets, while extended strain on heating systems keeps energy demand elevated. Residents should continue monitoring fuel supplies, check pipes for freezing risk, and allow extra travel time due to slick surfaces.

A gradual warm-up is expected in the coming days, but temperatures may still fall short of the freezing mark through much of the week. If the pattern holds, additional records could be challenged before any meaningful thaw arrives.
