Fairbanks, Alaska – Heavy rain is pushing rivers in northwest Alaska dangerously close to flood stage, prompting a Flood Watch through noon Friday for the South Slopes of the Western Brooks Range and Upper Kobuk Valleys, including Walker Lake, Ambler, Shungnak, and Kobuk.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, the Koyukuk River could crest near Alatna by late Wednesday, while the Kobuk River is already rising at Kobuk. More rain is expected through the end of the week, raising the risk of widespread stream and river flooding.

Moderate rainfall is soaking already saturated ground, increasing the likelihood of excessive runoff. Area creeks and streams are flowing high and could breach banks if additional rainfall continues. Flash flooding is also possible in low-lying or poor drainage areas.

Residents along streams and rivers are urged to stay alert, monitor local forecasts, and prepare for quick action if flooding develops. Those in flood-prone areas should have emergency plans in place and consider moving to higher ground if needed.

Flood threats remain in effect through at least Friday morning, with more watches or warnings likely as the system progresses.
