Fairbanks, Alaska – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for parts of the Fairbanks area as a strong storm system threatens hazardous travel conditions from Friday into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, periods of strong winds and blowing snow are possible between Friday and Sunday. Wind speeds are expected to range from 25 to 45 miles per hour, with gusts potentially reaching up to 60 mph in exposed areas.
Snowfall is expected to accompany the winds, with accumulations of 3 to 6 inches possible by Saturday afternoon in portions of the Interior. The combination of falling snow and strong winds may lead to significantly reduced visibility due to blowing and drifting snow.
Travel impacts are most likely Friday night into Saturday morning, when conditions may deteriorate rapidly. Visibility could drop suddenly, especially along highways and open terrain.
Residents and travelers are urged to monitor forecast updates, prepare for difficult travel, and consider adjusting plans as the potential for winter storm conditions increases.
