Fairbanks, AK – Drivers across the Fairbanks area are urged to use caution tonight as the National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory through midnight for freezing drizzle and slick road conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, patchy freezing drizzle mixed with light snow is expected to continue through Friday evening across Eielson AFB, Salcha, Fairbanks Metro, and Two Rivers. The moisture could quickly glaze bridges and overpasses, creating hazardous conditions during the evening commute.

The advisory, in effect until midnight AKST, notes that roads and sidewalks may become slick, particularly in shaded or untreated areas. Motorists are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking or lane changes.

Meteorologists said more persistent snowfall is expected later tonight, which should bring an end to the freezing drizzle as temperatures dip further below freezing.

Residents are also advised to use extra care when walking on sidewalks, driveways, and steps, as even light ice accumulation could lead to slips or falls.

Travelers can check up-to-date Alaska road conditions by dialing 511 or visiting the state’s official road report site.
