Fairbanks, Alaska – Roadways in Kobuk and Allakaket have already seen flooding, and more rain is on the way through Wednesday morning as northern Alaska faces prolonged high water levels.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 12:00 p.m. AKDT Tuesday, September 3, due to runoff from last week’s heavy rainfall. The alert covers the Noatak, Kobuk, and Koyukuk Rivers, where creeks and low-lying areas are especially vulnerable.

River levels are already at flood stage in Hughes, and another 0.5 to 1 inch of rain is expected across the Southern Brooks Range by Tuesday. A second round of moisture is likely Wednesday night, which could bring an additional inch of rain, worsening already elevated water levels.

Residents along the rivers should remain alert for fast-changing conditions and be ready to move to higher ground. Avoid traveling on flooded roadways, and have emergency kits and communication plans in place.

The NWS urges residents to monitor NOAA Weather Radio and local media for updates. Additional warnings may be issued if rainfall continues into the week.
