Chicago, Illinois – Oppressive heat continues to grip northern Illinois as high temperatures push into the mid-to-upper 90s with dangerous heat indices between 100° and 105° expected through Monday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, this prolonged heat wave will bring little overnight relief, especially in the city where lows may not drop below 80°. Storm chances return Monday night into Tuesday, but until then, dangerously hot and humid conditions will dominate.

In Chicago, Midway and O’Hare airports both show forecast heat indices peaking above 103° during the day Sunday and Monday. Suburbs like Aurora, Joliet, and Kankakee could see similar readings, while Rockford and Dixon remain only slightly cooler. Breezy afternoon winds will offer little reprieve. The NWS warns that anyone without access to cooling is at risk for heat-related illness.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak hours, wear light clothing, and drink water frequently. Stay in air-conditioned spaces and check on vulnerable neighbors. Cooling centers across Cook, Will, and Lake counties are expected to remain open through the early week.

The heat wave will break slowly as thunderstorms develop Tuesday through Thursday. Another update is expected Monday evening.
