Des Moines, Iowa – Triple-digit heat will grip much of Iowa through Sunday evening, with heat indices peaking between 100°F and 105°F across central and southern parts of the state, including Des Moines, Ames, and Ottumwa.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, extreme heat is expected to persist until at least 9 p.m. Sunday, prompting safety concerns for outdoor workers, vulnerable populations, and anyone without access to air conditioning. Cities such as Ames and Marshalltown are forecast to experience maximum heat indices of 105°F to 106°F by mid-afternoon.

Conditions are most intense between noon and 6 p.m., with Des Moines expected to feel like 104°F by 3 p.m. Heat-related illnesses are possible, especially without adequate hydration or rest breaks. Officials urge residents to stay indoors, avoid strenuous activity, and never leave children or pets inside parked cars.

Overnight lows will offer little relief, staying in the upper 70s across much of the region. Though slightly cooler weather returns Monday, southeast Iowa — including Ottumwa and Lamoni — may continue to experience hot conditions.

Warnings remain in effect through tonight, with additional advisories possible if heat persists into Monday.
