Duluth, MN – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Duluth has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for the Northland region, including much of northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin, as wind chills are forecast to drop as low as 35 to 37 below zero from Friday evening through Sunday morning.

The advisory includes Duluth, International Falls, Grand Marais, Ely, Brainerd, Hibbing, Hayward, and Ashland, as well as numerous tribal lands across the region — including Bois Forte, Fond du Lac, Mille Lacs, Bad River, Red Cliff, and Lac Courte Oreilles reservations.

According to the NWS, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, and hypothermia is possible with prolonged exposure. Even during daytime hours Saturday, temperatures are expected to stay in the negative teens, with wind chills plummeting again Saturday night into early Sunday.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, dress in layers, and ensure pets and livestock have proper shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Officials also recommend checking on elderly or vulnerable neighbors and using space heaters safely to avoid fire hazards.

While skies are expected to remain mostly clear, the extreme cold will make travel and outdoor recreation — especially near Voyageurs National Park and the Boundary Waters — potentially dangerous without proper preparation.
