Eustis, Florida – A section of State Road 44 westbound near Royal Trails Road was shut down Sunday due to a large brush fire and downed power lines, prompting an active traffic alert in Lake County.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews responded to the scene after a brush fire spread near the roadway, causing power lines to fall and creating unsafe conditions for motorists. As a result, SR-44 westbound near Royal Trails Road was closed while responders worked to secure the area and begin repairs.
Law enforcement and emergency personnel remain on scene managing traffic control and coordinating with utility crews. Officials have not provided an estimated reopening time, and drivers are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
The closure affects a key east–west corridor used by residents traveling between Eustis and surrounding rural communities. Traffic delays are expected in the area as vehicles are rerouted away from the shutdown zone.
Authorities emphasized that the closure is necessary to protect public safety while downed power lines are addressed and fire conditions are fully contained. Motorists are warned not to attempt to bypass barricades or drive through affected areas.
Drivers traveling near State Road 44, Royal Trails Road, and nearby connectors should plan for additional travel time and remain alert for changing traffic patterns. Updates will be issued as conditions improve and the roadway becomes safe to reopen.
