Eureka, CA – Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast to hit Eureka and the surrounding areas late Sunday, with conditions expected to persist through Monday evening. The National Weather Service in Eureka warned that rainfall could bring totals between 0.5 to 2 inches in some areas, with gusty winds reaching up to 45 mph on coastal headlands.
According to the NWS, the storm is expected to bring “moderate to brief periods of heavy rain” beginning Sunday night at 10 p.m. and continuing into Monday. The agency cautioned residents about possible flooding, especially on roadways and in areas with poor drainage. Small creeks and streams could rise, increasing the risk of localized flooding.
The NWS also issued a high surf advisory for Monday night through Tuesday. Waves of 20 to 24 feet are expected to hit west-facing beaches. The agency urged beachgoers to avoid rocks and jetties and not to turn their backs on the ocean, as large waves can sweep people into the water.
Local officials advise residents to secure loose outdoor items and exercise caution on the roads.
