Eureka, CA — Spring weather is stirring up danger along the Northern California coast, with sneaker waves and heavy rain continuing through Wednesday afternoon. Officials warn beachgoers and drivers along U.S. Highway 101 to prepare for sudden wave surges and slick road conditions from Eureka to Mendocino.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until 2 p.m. Wednesday for Del Norte, Northern Humboldt, Southwestern Humboldt, and Mendocino coastal counties. Sneaker waves can unexpectedly sweep people into the ocean from rocks, beaches, and jetties. Large debris such as logs may also be moved by these waves, increasing the risk of injury.

Residents should stay well back from the shoreline, avoid walking on jetties, and never turn their back on the ocean. Drivers along coastal stretches like U.S. 101 should prepare for reduced visibility from fog and slippery roads from consistent rain.

Rain is expected throughout Wednesday with winds gusting up to 34 mph. Wednesday night continues wet and breezy, with a low near 49°F. Thursday brings more rain and similar gusty winds, keeping conditions damp and hazardous.

5-Day Eureka Weather Outlook:
