California – Waves lap closer to road edges, rain drums steadily, and the tide line creeps inland as the North Coast enters New Year’s Eve under growing coastal flood concerns. Humboldt County faces a multi-day stretch of elevated tides and heavy rain that could disrupt travel as 2026 begins.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect this morning for the Northern Humboldt Coast during peak high tides. A Coastal Flood Watch follows from Thursday morning through Saturday afternoon, when flooding becomes more likely around Humboldt Bay. High astronomical tides combined with storm surge may push saltwater 1 to 1.5 feet above normal levels, with higher water possible later Friday and Saturday.

In the Eureka area, low-lying roads near Humboldt Bay, King Salmon, and coastal access points may see saltwater inundation. Some coastal roads could close temporarily around high tide, and shoreline erosion is possible. Drivers should watch for water covering pavement, especially near marina districts and bayside neighborhoods.

Rain increases through New Year’s Day and continues into Friday, at times heavy. Gusty winds Friday may further worsen conditions along exposed stretches of Highway 101. Streams and small rivers, including the Eel, Mad, and Mattole, could rise quickly, raising the risk of localized flooding inland.

Temperatures remain above freezing, but persistent rain and standing water will slow travel and increase hydroplaning risk. Residents should move vehicles from flood-prone areas, avoid driving through saltwater, and prepare for changing conditions around each tide cycle.

Flood watches and advisories may expand as rainfall intensifies. Conditions remain unsettled heading into the first weekend of 2026. Living or traveling near the coast? Share what you’re seeing where the water meets the road.
