California — Rain taps steadily against windows this morning as mist curls along the redwood-lined coast near Eureka. The calm masks a volatile setup offshore, where strong winds and soaking rain are lining up to create dangerous conditions across far Northern California.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a High Wind Warning is in effect through early Wednesday for Del Norte County and the Northern Humboldt Coast. South winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 55 mph along exposed headlands and ridges. Power outages and downed trees are possible as the strongest winds arrive.

At the same time, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday evening for Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity, Mendocino, and Lake counties. Multiple rounds of heavy rain move through the region, adding to already saturated ground. Additional rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are likely, with localized amounts approaching 9 inches in favored terrain.

Travel impacts could escalate quickly. Rockslides and debris flows may affect Highway 101, Highway 299, and steep coastal roads. Creeks and rivers are expected to rise rapidly, and flooding may develop in low-lying neighborhoods and poor drainage areas.

Rain intensifies tonight and continues through Wednesday, when wind-driven downpours reduce visibility. Conditions remain unsettled through Christmas Day, with periods of heavy rain and gusty winds keeping roads slick and hazardous.

By Thursday night and Friday, rain continues, though winds ease somewhat. Highs stay in the low to mid-50s. Flooding concerns persist as runoff builds, especially for those traveling after Christmas.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, avoid driving during peak wind periods, and never cross flooded roadways. Conditions may worsen quickly with little notice.
