California – Rain sweeps sideways across the North Coast before sunrise, rattling windows and darkening highways with a steady sheen. Creeks run louder than usual, and wind bends coastal trees, a clear sign that a developing Weather Alert could complicate post-Christmas travel plans.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday evening for Del Norte, Humboldt, Trinity, Mendocino, and Lake counties. Additional rainfall of several inches is possible, with localized totals approaching higher amounts in the coastal ranges. Excessive runoff may lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying areas, especially where soils are already saturated.
At the same time, a Wind Advisory continues along the Northern Humboldt Coast. South winds of 15 to 25 mph are common, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph in exposed headlands and higher terrain. These winds can make driving difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles on U.S. 101 and coastal routes. Expect falling branches, scattered debris, and reduced visibility during heavier rain.
Rain remains widespread today and Friday, keeping daytime highs in the low 50s. Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly during heavier downpours. Plan extra time if driving, avoid flooded roadways, and never cross water of unknown depth. To be fair, breaks in rainfall are possible, but showers redevelop fast as moisture continues to stream inland.
Looking ahead, conditions slowly improve late Friday night into Saturday. Rain chances drop, winds ease, and skies begin to brighten. Saturday stays cool, with highs near 50, while Sunday turns partly sunny and calmer, offering a safer window for weekend travel.
Early next week brings drier weather and slightly milder afternoons, though forecasters continue monitoring additional Pacific systems. For now, stay weather-aware, secure loose items, and prepare for changing conditions while the Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday evening.
