The Pacific pounds the Northern California shoreline this morning with towering surf and powerful sneaker waves that are making beaches along the Humboldt and Del Norte coasts dangerous for anyone venturing too close to the water. According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until 8 a.m. Monday, warning of breaking waves up to 20 feet and a high risk for strong rip currents.

Waves this size can surge well beyond the typical tide line — often without warning. Sneaker waves are known for their sudden power, sweeping logs, debris, and even bystanders off the beach. Locals are urged to stay off jetties, rocks, and low-lying coastal trails, especially near Trinidad Head, Samoa Beach, and Centerville Beach.

While inland areas of Humboldt County will stay calm and dry through midweek, coastal travelers should use caution on Highway 101 where spray and sea mist could reduce visibility. Conditions will gradually ease late Monday as winds shift north, but another moderate swell could return later in the week, keeping surf slightly elevated into Thursday.

Temperatures remain mild — highs in the mid-50s and lows near 40°F — with mostly sunny skies expected through the week. Early December travel looks ideal inland, but coastal recreation remains risky until the surf subsides.

Five-Day Outlook (Eureka, CA):

  • Monday: Mostly sunny, high 57°F, low 41°F.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high 56°F, low 41°F.
  • Wednesday: Partly sunny, high 56°F, low 41°F.
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, high 57°F, low 37°F.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny, high 57°F, low 47°F.
