Eureka, California – Powerful coastal winds could begin impacting drivers and coastal communities within hours as strong northerly gusts build across Humboldt County, with peak gusts approaching 50 mph possible along exposed sections of US-101 by Thursday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, strengthening northerly winds will develop across coastal northern California Thursday as a tightening pressure gradient moves into the region. Wind gusts over coastal waters could reach between 42 and 47 mph, with a small chance of isolated gusts near 50 mph across exposed headlands and outer coastal areas.
Communities along the immediate coastline, including Eureka, Arcata, and Trinidad, may experience sustained breezy conditions throughout the day. Drivers along US-101, particularly across elevated sections near coastal bluffs and bridges, could encounter sudden crosswinds capable of pushing high-profile vehicles such as trucks and vans.
Inland areas of Humboldt County will also feel gusty conditions, though winds are expected to remain slightly weaker than along the coast. Gusts between 25 and 30 mph are possible across valleys, while exposed ridges and coastal headlands may see stronger bursts reaching 35 to 43 mph.
The strong winds may also cause minor impacts such as loose outdoor objects being blown around and occasional small tree limbs breaking, especially in exposed coastal communities. Residents are encouraged to secure lightweight outdoor items and remain cautious near trees during stronger wind periods.
Gusty conditions are expected to continue into Friday as northerly winds remain active along the northern California coastline. Mariners should expect rough seas building offshore, while coastal travelers should remain alert for strong crosswinds along major highways. Additional wind advisories could be issued if gusts trend stronger than currently expected.
