Eureka, CA – Mariners along the Northern California coast are facing dangerous conditions this weekend as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Eureka has issued both a Small Craft Advisory and a Gale Watch for offshore waters.
According to the NWS, hazardous seas and strong winds are expected from Cape Mendocino to Pt Arena and from Pt St. George southward 10 to 60 nautical miles offshore.
- Small Craft Advisory: Now in effect from Friday, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m. through Saturday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m. Offshore winds of 15 to 25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots and seas up to 10 feet are forecast.
- Gale Watch: In effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning, Oct. 5. Winds may increase to 20 to 30 knots with gusts reaching 35 to 40 knots and seas up to 9 feet.
The weather service warns that these conditions could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility. Mariners are urged to remain in port, seek safe harbor, or secure vessels ahead of the strongest winds and seas.
The advisory affects waters near Humboldt, Mendocino, and Del Norte counties, including routes used by fishing and recreational boats.
This weekend’s forecast serves as a reminder of the hazards posed by rapidly changing coastal weather.
