Eureka, California – A minor offshore earthquake measuring 2.8 magnitude struck 76 kilometers west-northwest of Petrolia on Monday afternoon, according to seismic data released by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The tremor occurred at 10:24 a.m. PDT (17:24 UTC) at a depth of 27 kilometers beneath the Pacific Ocean floor. According to the Northern California Seismic System (NCSS), no damage or injuries were reported, and the quake was not widely felt across populated areas of Humboldt County.

The event occurred within a highly active seismic zone near the Mendocino Triple Junction, where the Pacific, North American, and Juan de Fuca plates meet. Although this quake was minor, the region has a history of more powerful activity and remains under close monitoring by geologists and emergency planners.

Residents near Eureka, Arcata, and Ferndale are reminded to review emergency kits, secure heavy furniture, and ensure they’re signed up for local ShakeAlert warnings. While no aftershocks have been recorded, the USGS continues to assess seismic activity in the region.

More updates will be provided if any related tremors occur or citizen reports increase.
