Eureka, CA – Spring weather is bringing a dangerous threat to Northern California’s coastline this weekend.
A beach hazards statement has been issued for the coastal areas from Del Norte to Mendocino counties, including Eureka, as an increased risk of sneaker waves is expected to hit Saturday night and last through Sunday evening. These large, unexpected waves can sweep across the shore without warning, posing serious threats to anyone near the water.

According to the National Weather Service, sneaker waves can rapidly pull people into the ocean, crash them against rocks, or cause severe injury by sweeping them into debris or under large objects. These waves can also move substantial objects, like logs, making the shoreline extremely hazardous for anyone near the water.

Local authorities urge residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution, especially on rocky beaches or jetties. “Don’t be fooled by an ocean that looks calm,” the weather service warned, advising people to stay far from the water’s edge and avoid steep beaches. It’s critical to never turn your back on the ocean, even if the water appears calm for a few moments.

Eureka residents can expect mild temperatures this weekend, with highs in the low 60s on Saturday and Sunday, alongside a chance of rain starting Sunday evening. This period of unpredictable spring weather will continue into next week with temperatures in the high 50s to low 60s.
