Eureka, CA – Residents across northwest California are being urged to prepare for strong to damaging winds as a powerful storm system approaches the region, bringing the potential for downed trees, power outages, and hazardous travel from Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a High Wind Warning is in effect for Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, and Lake counties from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. Forecasts call for south to southeast winds of 25 to 40 mph, with gusts ranging from 50 to 70 mph, especially along coastal headlands, exposed ridges, and mountain gaps.
In Trinity County, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Wednesday, where gusts up to 50 mph are possible, with locally stronger winds in exposed areas.
Meteorologists warn that saturated ground conditions will make trees more vulnerable to falling, increasing the risk of blocked roadways, blowing debris, and widespread power outages. Officials strongly advise residents to avoid travel during the strongest winds, particularly overnight, when visibility is reduced and debris may be harder to see.
The most intense winds are expected Tuesday night through early Wednesday morning, before gradually diminishing later Wednesday. Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and be prepared for possible extended power disruptions.
Anyone who must travel should use extreme caution and avoid forested roads where falling trees are more likely.
For the latest updates, residents should continue monitoring alerts from the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies.
