Eugene, Ore. – Drivers across western Oregon face a messy start to the week as storms bring heavy rain and thunder to the I-5 corridor. Standing water could slow traffic in Eugene as early as Monday afternoon, with showers continuing into the evening and worsening Tuesday. Residents should prepare for slick commutes, possible ponding on Highway 126, and short bursts of strong wind.

According to the National Weather Service, showers will dominate Monday with thunderstorms possible after 5 p.m. in Lane County. Winds may gust up to 20 mph by Tuesday afternoon, pushing down tree limbs and causing spot outages in Eugene and Springfield. Rainfall could top one inch in heavier cells, increasing flood potential in low-lying areas.

Travelers should allow extra time on I-5 and consider avoiding non-essential driving during the heaviest rainfall. Power crews recommend charging devices early and securing outdoor items before Tuesday’s stronger wind gusts arrive.

The wet pattern continues into Wednesday, the first day of October, when widespread showers again blanket western Oregon. Rain chances ease slightly Thursday and Friday, but skies remain unsettled with periodic showers. Temperatures will hold in the upper 60s during the day, cooling to the upper 40s by week’s end.

More updates are expected as October begins, with additional advisories possible if thunderstorms strengthen.
