Eugene, Oregon – A DUI suspect was arrested in Eugene after a crash damaged a guardrail and prompted a K9 search late Thursday.
According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded just before midnight to the area of South Willamette Street and Fox Hollow Road for a reported crash. Deputies located a heavily damaged sedan that had destroyed a guardrail but was unoccupied. A witness reported seeing two people walking north from the crash scene.
A sergeant arrived with K9 Tito, who began tracking north toward Spencer Butte. Deputies later identified one individual as Kyle Edwin Mcilvain, 28, of Eugene. Authorities said Mcilvain allegedly jumped over a resident’s fence and fled on foot. The second individual cooperated with deputies and was determined to be the passenger. That person sustained minor injuries consistent with being in a crash and was treated at the scene by Eugene Springfield Fire.
Additional deputies, Eugene Police officers and Oregon State Troopers established a perimeter while K9 Ripp joined the search, according to the sheriff’s office. K9 Ripp tracked over several fences before showing interest in a backyard, where deputies found Mcilvain hiding in the yard and detained him.
After further investigation, Mcilvain was arrested and lodged at the Lane County Jail on charges including DUII, assault in the third degree, reckless driving, reckless endangering, criminal mischief in the second degree, failure to perform the duties of a driver involving property damage, and two counts of trespass in the second degree.
The crash and search activity may have briefly affected late-night traffic near South Willamette Street, an area frequently used by student commuters.
The investigation remains ongoing.
