Burlington, Vt. – Residents in New York’s northern Adirondacks and Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom face their first hard freeze of the season early Saturday. Overnight lows between 25 and 30 degrees are expected from Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake to Island Pond and Lunenburg, prompting a Freeze Warning from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the coldest temperatures will occur near sunrise, when frost and freeze conditions are likely to damage or kill unprotected crops and sensitive plants. Homeowners are also urged to safeguard outdoor plumbing, which may be vulnerable in colder valleys and rural areas.
Farmers and gardeners across southern Franklin, western Clinton, and Essex counties should cover plants or bring potted vegetation indoors ahead of the freeze. Outdoor enthusiasts camping or hiking in the Adirondacks or Essex County, Vermont, should prepare for bitterly cold mornings, with frost covering roads, fields, and trails.
The Freeze Warning remains in effect until 8 a.m. Saturday, and additional freezing conditions may persist into Saturday night.
