Essex County, Massachusetts – Heavy snowfall is creating dangerous travel conditions across the North Shore as a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 7 p.m. EST for Essex County, including both western and eastern portions of the county. Forecasters expect total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches before the storm exits the region later this evening.

Snowfall rates may be heavy at times, quickly covering untreated roads and reducing traction. As the storm continues, travel conditions are expected to deteriorate, particularly during periods of steadier snowfall.

Significant impacts are expected along Interstate 95, Route 128, Route 1, and Route 114, as well as local roads serving communities such as Gloucester, Lawrence, Beverly, Salem, Danvers, and surrounding North Shore cities and towns. Snow-covered roadways, highway ramps, and secondary streets may make driving very difficult throughout the day.

The National Weather Service warns that roads will become snow covered, and motorists should be prepared for slow travel speeds, extended commute times, and hazardous driving conditions. Conditions may worsen quickly where snowfall intensifies, especially during the afternoon hours.

Residents who must travel are advised to carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water, in case of delays or becoming stranded. Drivers should also allow extra stopping distance and avoid sudden braking.

For commuters, delivery drivers, and weekend travelers, the most challenging conditions are expected through late afternoon, with gradual improvement possible after snowfall tapers off this evening.

Residents across Essex County are encouraged to monitor official weather updates and local road conditions throughout the day. Unnecessary travel should be postponed until conditions improve after the warning expires.
