Carterville, IL – An inmate from the Williamson County Jail, John D. Corliss, escaped during his work release program on January 6, 2023. The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office launched a manhunt after Corliss, serving time for non-violent offenses, failed to return to jail.

According to Sheriff Jeff Diederich, Corliss was located in Carterville, IL, approximately 6 hours after his scheduled return. He was found in a vehicle in a parking lot, allegedly with a half-empty whiskey bottle and items containing methamphetamine residue. Corliss reportedly resisted arrest, resulting in a struggle before he was taken into custody. He faces multiple charges, including escape, possession of a controlled substance, and resisting a peace officer.

Sheriff Diederich stressed the value of the work release program for non-violent offenders, emphasizing adherence to its rules. The incident has led to the suspension of Corliss’ work release privileges pending further court directives.
