Marquette, Michigan – Snow, sleet and a glaze of ice are creating hazardous road conditions across Michigan’s central and eastern Upper Peninsula, with visibility dropping as winds gust to 40 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. EST Wednesday for Alger, Luce, Delta and both northern and southern Schoolcraft counties. Total snow and sleet accumulations between 4 and 7 inches are expected, along with around one-tenth of an inch of ice.
Communities including Munising, Escanaba, Manistique, Gladstone, Newberry and Grand Marais will see the greatest impacts. Blowing snow may reduce visibility significantly along U.S. 41 and M-28, particularly in open stretches near Lake Superior. Ice accumulation could coat bridges and overpasses first, increasing the risk of spinouts during both the morning and evening commutes.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time and be prepared for sudden visibility drops. Residents are urged to keep flashlights, food and water in vehicles and prepare for isolated power outages where ice builds on lines.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after 7 p.m., but slick roads may persist into the night as temperatures remain below freezing.
