Gibson City, IL – A false cold weather alert sent through weather apps on Tuesday afternoon left Gibson City residents confused. Despite temperatures hovering around 73°F, a notification warned of wind chills dropping 20 to 25 degrees below zero. The erroneous advisory quickly drew attention from locals baffled by the message.

According to local reports, the National Weather Service (NWS) is investigating the origin of the false cold alert. The advisory appeared on select apps but didn’t impact all users. The alert warned of severe cold beginning at 9 p.m., which clearly did not match the actual weather conditions.

The NWS confirmed there was no impending cold front, assuring residents that the wind chills would not reach the extreme lows forecasted in the alert.

While the cause of the alert remains unknown, the NWS continues to monitor the situation to prevent future errors. Local authorities advised residents to verify weather alerts from multiple sources and disregard the inaccurate notice. No other regions in Illinois appeared to have been impacted by the glitch.
