Erie, Pa. – Northern Pennsylvania sits on the southern edge of a potential aurora event tonight, with a chance for brief northern lights visibility near Lake Erie.

According to NOAA, current geomagnetic storm conditions may allow auroras to extend into parts of the Great Lakes, including northwest Pennsylvania. The best opportunity will occur between late evening and early Wednesday morning.

Communities near Erie and surrounding rural areas have the highest chance of seeing faint aurora displays, especially in dark locations away from city lights. Visibility may be limited and short-lived, but stronger pulses of solar activity could briefly enhance the display.

Residents should look north and remain patient, as aurora activity can appear suddenly and fade just as quickly. Cameras may help detect faint colors not easily visible to the eye.

Cloud cover and local conditions will ultimately determine visibility, so those interested should monitor updates throughout the night.

Aurora chances may linger into early Wednesday, but conditions are expected to fluctuate as the storm evolves.
