Erie County, NY — Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia has issued a warning to residents about a new phone scam targeting locals. The sheriff’s office received reports of individuals impersonating department officials, claiming recipients owe fines or bail money for a family member.

According to the sheriff’s office, scammers inform victims they have warrants and demand payment through credit cards or gift cards. The calls are meant to pressure individuals into sending money immediately to “clear up” supposed legal issues.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office stated they never call residents to request payments over the phone. If anyone receives a similar call, they should hang up immediately and report the incident to local police.
