Grand Island, NY – Authorities are investigating a fatal traffic-related incident that claimed the life of a Grand Island man Thursday evening, according to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Sheriff John C. Garcia, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Bureau/Crash Investigation Unit was notified at approximately 10 p.m. Thursday after the Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office reported a deceased male connected to an earlier incident in the Town of Grand Island.

The victim was identified as Pavel Tsygyrash, 59, of Grand Island. Officials reported that Tsygyrash was working on a semi-truck parked in a lot at the corner of Grand Island Boulevard and Long Road when he became pinned between the semi-truck and a pickup truck.

Investigators said Tsygyrash was taken by his son to Kenmore Mercy Hospital around 5:45 p.m. Thursday. He was later transferred to the Erie County Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased shortly before 7 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies from the Police Services Division secured the pickup truck involved in the incident. Authorities noted that the vehicle was located in a parking lot with fragments of broken glass or plastic around the passenger-side door and a rolled-up blanket underneath the door.

A Dodge Ram pickup truck with a broken front passenger-side headlight was later located in the driveway of Tsygyrash’s residence, officials said.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Bureau responded to the scene and is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. No additional details have been released, and officials said the investigation remains ongoing.
